December 2011 Prayer & Sermon
Thank you everyone for your support during the past year! We are thankful for the many blessings shown by God the Parent and by the congregation!
For many who attended the service it was a time to experience the joy of communion with God and share in the experiences of people who went through and survived very difficult times. Thank you to the speakers Carl Nakao and Yasue Uegawachi and all who contributed to making the service possible. Mahalo!
Wishing you all a happy holiday season!
Rev. Owen and Taeko Nakao
Please read "Saved from Cancer" by Carl Nakao and "Surviving the Atomic Blast in Hiroshima" by Yasue Uegawachi. And this month's prayer.
December Monthly Service 2011
As we approach the end of 2012 I have been pondering our accomplishments for the year... Have we all accomplished our goals and resolutions for the year?
Also, this past December 7th we commemorated the 70th Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack which ignited the war with Japan and ended with atomic bombs dropping on Hiroshima & Nagasaki.
Some of you may not know that Mrs. Yasue Uegawachi our regular monthly service attendee is a atomic bomb survivor. She will share with us some of her experiences on that fateful day in this month's sermon. And also a few words of gratitude from Mr. Carl Nakao.

November Monthly Service Reminder パール教会月次祭お知らせ
Some of you may know that the suicide rate in Japan is one of the highest in the world and in the U.S., although not as high as Japan, suicides are increasing. What drives people to take their lives? We would like to explore the possible causes and what we can do to prevent suicides in our sermon at this month's Pearl Church monthly service.

October Grand Service at Pearl Church
We'll be commemorating the beginning of Tenrikyo by conducting the October Grand Service at Pearl Church.
When we sing the first verse of the daily seated service, what are we saying? "All ills sweep away and save us, please, Tenri O no Mikoto."
We make a sweep away motion with our hands in the area of our heart. Which implies cleaning our heart. "Purify the mind" is the title of our sermon which covers the essence of the Tenrikyo teaching which
prepares our mind to receive the Truth.
In the Ofudesaki we read,
"There is nothing I cannot teach. But there is no one who listens with a purified mind."

September Monthly Service 2011
Giving is an essential part of our life of faith. We call it contribution and dedication. How does contribution and dedication play a part in our daily faith? Why is it important? That and more as we remember the victims of the 9/11 attack. Please join us in our quest to bring peace and joy to the world in the Service for Universal

Thank you for your bazaar hinokishin!
Blessed with just the right amount of rain, we were able to conduct the 41st Annual Tenrikyo Bazaar without any major (if any) accidents and injury. We were caught a bit off guard with what seemed to be a larger crowd than ever with long lines forming not only for the rummage sale but also at the scrip booths. There were some complaints about having to wait a long time to buy the scrips (because they came at 7:30am), there were other comments, like, "This is the best bazaar!" and "the prices are low." A long time member's daughter who came for the first time said, "Wow, this is a really big bazaar!"
We are truly blessed with this beautiful property, dedicated volunteers and the support of Bishop and Mrs. Hamada. I feel really proud to be a part of this event! I feel we are fulfilling the purpose of the bazaar: to do nioigake (sprinkle the fragrance of the teachings) to the community. Thank you all for your sincere hinokishin!

Annual Tenrikyo Bazaar and Bazaar Hinokishin (Prep work and running)
Thank you all for your bazaar hinokishin last Saturday and extra thanks to those who been coming ever since.
We are rapidly approaching the bazaar day on Sunday, August 28, from 8:30am - 2:30pm. Please forward the attached bazaar flyer to friends, family and your respective church congregations.
Just a few reminders and requests:
1. Some of you may know that there is a major storm or hurricane system passing south of the islands in about a week. Let us first give our thanks for our daily blessings, express our gratitude through our sincere hinokishin, and pray for minimal negative weather impact on the bazaar.
2. Bazaar Hinokshin this weekend
Sat. 8/20, 9am: TCC general cleaning, clean bathrooms, rakes leaves, weeding in the Japanese Garden, weed whacking behind judo hall, west house and along Robinson Lane. Sun 8/21, 1pm (after MHQ monthly service),
- Setup canopies: Library-Judo, Games, BBQ Chicken, Vegetables, Cut flowers (need windbreaker), Plants, and Bubble Drink
- Need canopy over back of storage shed.
- Construct: Bazaar booths, scrip booths, sushi rack, cut flowers shelving, build more barricades, check on signs.
We had a low turnout last Saturday, so please help us contact people to come out to help! Forward this email to who ever you know.
Mahalo,
Owen Nakao
Monthly Service Reminder
I remember attending Sunday School (Tenrikyo) as a child. One of the students asked the teacher, "How is it that Tenrikyo teaches that we came from a fish and a serpent, yet in school, we are taught that we came from a monkey?" The teacher was not of the intellectual type, rather a more "blue collar" type of person, but now looking back, he gave a rather profound answer. He explained that as new discoveries are being made, science and Tenrikyo are getting closer together. I can think of a couple examples:
- In the Tenrikyo truth of origin, there is a stage in which there was a "she monkey" (I suppose female) who gave birth to five males and five females.
- In another section, it says that humans originally lived in the water, but eventually came to live on land.
Recently, there are many studies about how prayer is effective in healing. Previously science did not even consider the effectiveness of prayer for healing. But the results are undeniable and I cannot help but reflect back on what this teacher said. This month's sermon will discuss the effectiveness of faith and prayer to bring about healing, and how we can develop our faith and prayer in our daily life.
If you have administered the sazuke in the month of July, please let me know how many times. We are on track to reach our goal of 500 administrations for this year 2011 with 301 administrations as of July 31. If possible please send the date and the persons name so that we may include them in our prayers.
Please join us in gratitude and prayer in the service for "universal salvation", this Sunday, August 14, 2011, 10am
