Tenrikyo Pearl Church

June Service

Tuesday, June 7, 2005
Everyone, please welcome Mr. Kentaro Inoue who is presently doing missionary work everyday from Pearl Church from June 1st. He is a church successor designate in Japan and will eventually take over his father’s church (Shoufu Bunkyokai under Koga Grand Church), but he wants to put his sincerity to the test in Hawaii. He will stay for about 11 months.

For Pearl Church, in this season on the three years, one thousand days before Oyasama’s 120th Anniversary, it is an opportune time to further our mission and our spiritual growth. Let’s all work together to realize a successful 120th Anniversary and the Joyous Life to all.

And don’t forget to come this Sunday’s service! For those unable to attend, please attend in spirit at your respective locale or a nearby Tenrikyo church or mission.

May Prayer & Sermon

Monday, May 9, 2005
Thank you to all of you for your kind offerings and support.

We were feeling the effects of the tight housing market when a family of three (mother, daughter, and granddaughter) were evicted from their apartment. They stayed at Pearl Church for six days from 4/30 – 5/6.

The old Tenrikyo woman I mentioned in the sermon, practiced her faith in a simple way, but its effect inspired someone to adopt the faith. In this season of the three years, one thousand days before Oyasama’s 120th Anniversary, let us all PRACTICE our faith on a daily basis; it will be the foundation of your strong unshakable faith and surely bring inspiration and hope to the people around us.

April Service

Thursday, April 7, 2005
Our hearts, condolences, and prayers go out to the late Pope John Paul II and late Terri Shiavo who have been in the news and have passed away recently. In the weeks leading to the passing of the late Terri Shiavo, the dispute between Terri’s husband and her parents came to light in the media with the Florida governor, Jeb Bush, the Florida legislature, Congress and President Bush making specials laws to attempt to save Terri’s life. Many issues were debated with Terri’s husband, Michael Shiavo, appearing in interviews several times explaining his position. President Bush explained that we need to protect the weak. Michael Shiavo said that he wished to honor Terri’s wish to die in those circumstances. It was a very difficult time for people involved and the people who read about it in the newspaper or watched it on television. What should our position be as a Tenrikyo follower? This is a very difficult question and the answers may be different even among Tenrikyo followers, but I wish to explore some the issues in this month’s sermon from my point of view as a Tenrikyo minister/follower.

Thank you to all of you for your support and kind offerings!

On Sunday May 1, 2005, our parent church Tenrikyo Tengen Bunkyokai will be celebrating their 80th Anniversary since establishment as a church and 130 years since it was established as Tenrikyo’s first “fraternity,” “Tengen-ko” mentioned in the Anecdotes of Oyasama #43 “That Will Do.” Please let me know if you would like to attend this event in which the Shinbashira, his wife and the former Shinbashira will be present.

With love and gratitude…

Pastor Owen.
