October Grand Service Prayer 2013

Before God the Parent, Tenri O No-Mikoto, I, Owen Osamu Nakao, Pastor of Tenrikyo Pearl Church, humbly express the following prayer:

On this day, as granted to this church, we have gathered here to conduct the October Grand Service to commemorate the Teachings’ day of origin.

As in the following words of God, “I am God of Origin, God in Truth. There is causality in this Residence. At this time I have descended here to save all humankind. I wish to receive Miki as the Shrine of God.”  These were the first words declared by You, God the Parent, Tenri-O-no-Mikoto, through the mouth of Oyasama, Miki Nakayama.

That day was October 26, 1838.  From that day on, through Oyasama, You appeared in person to teach us the one final truth, the truth that You are the true Creator and Parent of humankind.  You taught us the Reason for our creation, which was from Your desire to have all humankind lead the Joyous Life, helping one another through the marvelous path of single-hearted salvation.

To attain this, You also taught us the Joyous Service with the intent to manifest once more, the marvelous power by which humankind and the world were created where there was no form. Through the sincere performance of this Service, the world will be reconstructed as the world of the Joyous Life, which is fully in accord with the intent of God the Parent.

Each of us here today, relying on You, intend to perform the Service in harmony and joy, becoming one with the mind of God.  Please accept our spirited minds of unity and let the joy of the harmonious union of God and humankind overflow.

Through Your blessing, our annual Pearl Church garage sale was conducted September 22 with 21 members and friends helping in various capacities. Net proceeds amounted to $1,000 of which 50% will be donated to the Mission Headquarters of Hawaii for the reroofing fund. The Pearl Church Autumn Memorial Service was faithfully conducted on September 28 with 9 attendees and the All Tenrikyo Nioigake Day with 11 participants from Pearl Church.   An average of four persons helped with the weekly yard service. In addition, we have engaged in Kamina Nagashi in Waikiki on several occasions.  Also, by Your providence, we have an opportunity to acquire the back property to better serve the community and advance our mission. We thank you deeply for your love and care and we pray for your continued guidance as we work towards this goal with our minds in unity.

In this first year of the three year of the three years, one thousand days leading up to Oyasama’s 130th Anniversary, we continue to engage in nioigake and salvation work and vow to follow Shinbashira’s words as expressed in Instruction Three.

May we, Your children, in this 176th year of Tenrikyo, come ever closer to understanding Your intentions, so that we may become “one” with You and manifest the Joyous Life as intended for all humanity.

In union with the congregation I humbly pray may it be so.

Garage Sale Success!

Taeko and I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who have supported today’s garage sale.  Net proceeds amounted to $985 with an anonymous donor adding $15 to make it $1,000.  As in any “major” endeavor, it is the combined efforts of everyone involved that has made this year’s garage sale a success.  This is the most ever, with our garage sales netting about 658 last year and 823 two years ago.

This year we’ve also experienced non members (of Pearl Church) donating their used items and then shop for other items at our garage sale.  Including someone who donated funds for the stone pavement project a few months ago just because she used to live in this area and saw our website.  A realtor who is representing the owner who is selling the property in the back of Pearl Church donated some items.  Rev. & Mrs. Colin Saito of Honolulu Church who also donated items and came to shop at our garage sale.  Many thanks and Aloha to all of you!

Hinokishin Will Save Us

Recently our son-in-law sent me an article on Time magazine titled, “How Service Can Save Us,” dated July 1, 2013.

The article explained how community service is helping veterans overcome their PTSD or “post traumatic stress disorder.” There are 261,998 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who received a provisional diagnosis of PTSD from 2002 through the first quarter of 2013. The article focused on veteran Ian Smith who felt sure that he wasn’t suffering from PTSD. Continue reading Hinokishin Will Save Us

Monthly Service Prayer July 2013

Before God the Parent, Tenri-O-no-Mikoto, I, Owen Osamu Nakao, Pastor of Tenrikyo Pearl Church, pray with reverence:

God the Parent, as we receive Your overflowing grace and blessings, which grants us the free use of our bodies, we advance toward the realization of the joyous life world as you guide us in our spiritual development. We are forever grateful for these blessings and we express our gratitude day and night as we apply our effort in sprinkling the fragrance of the teachings and salvation work.

Today is the day we are granted to conduct the July monthly service at Pearl Church. Taking to heart the teaching: “If the mind is sincere, the performance of any kind of Service will all bring salvation,” (Ofudesaki VIII: 3) the service performers will now unite their hearts to perform the seated service and Teodori joyously and in high spirits. As you observe the brothers and sisters of the path who have looked forward to this day singing the songs of the service in unison with hearts filled with gratitude for Your parental love, we hope that You can be spirited as well.

Through your blessing, sixteen persons from Pearl Church, attended the Annual Tenrikyo Picnic on July 4th. Also, one person from Pearl Church is auditing the Hawaii One-month Spiritual Development Course. We continue with the community yard service helping the elderly maintain their yards and neglected sidewalks.

Later this month, the pastor of this church will lead a group of 44 persons including 4 from Pearl Church in this year’s Children’s Pilgrimage to Jiba as the chairman of the Hawaii Boys & Girls Association. Our church successor Moses Nakao was appointed chairman of the Hawaii Young Men’s Association last month and he is presently attending the Brazil Young Men’s Association 60th Anniversary in Sao Paulo.

We give thanks that members of this church are taking active roles in church activities and the community bringing substance and spiritual growth to the church. We thank you deeply for these blessings as we strive to convey the teachings to as many people as possible.

As we help those in suffering, we pray for the victims and survivors of conflicts and disasters throughout the world; that they may have faith and resolve to overcome their grief and suffering.

In this first year of the three years, one thousand days leading up to Oyasama’s 130th Anniversary in 2016 we vow to follow the words of the Shinbashira as expressed in Instruction Three and continue to work together engaging in hinokishin and salvation work with a unity of mind and encourage as much people as possible to return to Jiba.

With the Shinbashira as the core we vow to make sincere efforts in our daily lives to truly follow the Divine Model of Oyasama.

We pray that Your guidance will strengthen us into worthy Yoboku, striving with a single heart for the salvation of others. We hope that our efforts will bring joy to You and peace in this world where we all help one another as brothers and sisters. With our minds in unity towards the Truth of the Jiba, we would like to spiritedly perform the July Monthly Service.

In union with the congregation, I pray for these blessings.

July 2013 Monthly Service Reminder

Thank you to you all for your support in welcoming the Shinbashira on 6/14 and attending the New Bishop Installation Service on 6/15.

Recently an article in Time magazine was brought to my attention. The title on the front page read: How Service Can Save Us, which confirms the teaching “We are saved by saving others.” This in turn brings to mind what a late local minister said about how science and Tenrikyo is coming closer and closer together. May I be so bold as to say, I think its more like how science is gradually catching up to Tenrikyo because the teachings are eternal and they never change. We will discuss this article in our sermon for the July Monthly Service.

Please join us in joy and gratitude as we perform the service for universal salvation!

Shinbashira’s Visit

June 14, 2013 — I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to those who came to welcome and meet the Shinbashira (central pillar or head of Tenrikyo) this morning.  Thank you very much and thank you to those who assisted in various duties for his visit!

The Shinbashira gave a short speech reminding us of the role of the church having received the Truth of the Jiba, as a place to perform the service for universal salvation and our roles as yoboku (timber or missionary): people who can administer the sazuke to those suffering from illness and stressed the importance of having a mind to uphold what Oyasama taught us regardless of being a yoboku or not.

In the dining room, I explained the history of Pearl Church beginning with first head minister Rev. Tsugi Nagayama, the first Tenrikyo woman missionary in Hawaii and then introduced members and friends of the congregation starting with the our former head minister, Rev. Yoshinobu Nakao.  In spite of the limited time everyone had a chance to meet the Shinbashira and share a few words of their faith and experience with him.I felt that we were able to convey our warmest aloha and respect befitting the honor of his visit.

Again thank you very much to all of you for your support!

The Significance of the Shinbashira – June 2013 Sermon

Good morning. I would like to thank all of you for taking the time to attend the June Monthly Service here at Pearl Church and thank you for your kind and sincere offerings. I am sure God the Parent and Oyasama is really happy to see you all here today and to have performed the service with joy and in high spirits!

Next Sunday is Father’s Day so if I don’t see you next Sunday, I would like to wish all the fathers a happy father’s day. Thank you for your love and nurturing.

The Significance of the Shinbashira

As most of you know, the new Bishop Installation Service will be held this Saturday on June 15th in the presence of the Shinbashira, who is the “main pillar” of Tenrikyo. That’s what the literal meaning of Shinbashira is: “main pillar” or the head of the Tenrikyo Church, such as the Pope is the head of the Catholic Church. During his stay in Hawaii, he has set aside time to visit several Hawaii churches, including Pearl this Friday, on June 14th.

To get a sense of the significance of his visit, we need to realize that there are 17,000 Tenrikyo church around the world. He will probably never visit all 17,000 Tenrikyo churches in his lifetime. So we are very, very, very honored that he will visit us.

The present Shinbashira is Zenji Nakayama, who is the 4th Shinbashira since Oyasama’s grandson Shinnosuke became the 1st Shinbashira.

The Shinbashira is our spiritual leader. He is the one who officiates at Church Headquarters services and ceremonies. Oyasama bestows the Truth of Sazuke through the Shinbashira when one returns to Jiba to receive it, and grants divine sanction through the Shinbashira for various church affairs, such as new church head minister, church construction, etc. He also issues instructions, such as Instruction Three.

In the Life of Oyasama it says that, when the first Shinbashira, Shinnosuke, was 16 years old, his father, Shuji passed away for rebirth. Shinnosuke then became the head of the household at the age of 17 and inherited the Nakayama family name and property. At this young age he underwent various hardships such as interference by police and protecting Oyasama.

When the early followers were attempting to obtain civil authorization from the government, they were considering appointing another person as the head of the church. At that time Shinnosuke was only 17 years old.

In establishing Shinnosuke Nakayama, her grandson, as the first Shinbashira during a time when the followers were Oyasama said,

“Sah, sah, indeed the Shinbashira is thin at present. But when flesh is added to him, no one knows how great he will become.”

Life of Oyasama p. 201

Her words awakened the followers instantly and they now understood that as long as they continued discussions with followers with a separate agenda, they would never be in accord with the will of God the Parent. Later She said,

“The core is thin. When the flesh of sincerity is added, he will grow stout.”

Oyasama often said, “Shinnosuke, the Shinbashira,” clearly indicating the core of the Path. Despite this, the attempts to appoint someone without such divine destiny to that post of responsibility, however temporary and whatever the reasons for haste, show how far off the mark their minds were.

To paraphrase: To add flesh to the core means for you to add the “meat” of your sincerity to the Shinbashira. If you add the flesh of your sincerity to Shinnosuke in accordance with the will of God the Parent, although he is still young and inexperienced, he will become a splendid Shinbashira. Life of Oyasama p. 204-205.

Here in the United States, the concept of leadership is quite different and shouldn’t be compared to the Shinbashira. Here, a candidate for political office campaigns and has show the people that he is worthy of the office after surviving much criticism. He is then elected by the people. However, in both cases, we should give them our support and respect, as they are our leaders.

Nine years ago when the present Shinbashira came for the mission headquarters 50th Anniversary, I was able to witness something so amazing. The 50th Anniversary reception was held in a large tent on the side of the mission headquarters sanctuary to accommodate the large crowd and also where the Shinbashira was seated. As the entertainment drew to a close heavy rain started to fall. When the entertainment ended, the Shinbashira stood up to leave and everyone stood up and an applauded. The attending ministers rushed to get umbrellas. However, as soon as he stepped out of the tent, the heavy rain stopped all of a sudden like someone turning off the faucet. I said to someone, close to me, “Did you see that?” I forgot who it was, but he was one of Shinbashira’s assigned drivers and he said, “Yup, the same thing happened where ever he went! When it when rained while he was in the car, it would stop just when he got out.”

In the Shinbashira’s visit to Hawaii and to our church, let all of us put the “meat” of our sincerity to the Shinbashira and welcome him with joy and gratitude.

Thank you for your attention.

May is the month that we celebrate Mother’s Day, which happens to fall on the second Sunday which is our monthly service day!  Please join us in celebrating Mother’s Day by first giving thanks to Oyasama who has the soul of the first mother of all human beings,  at the time of creation.  And of course, let’s not forget our own mothers, who gave birth and nurtured us through thick and thin.
